CUT NYAK DIEN

Ø Orientation

Cut Nyak Dien is an Indonesian National Hero from Aceh who fought against the Dutch during the Aceh War, he was born in Lampadang, the Kingdom of Aceh, in 1848. Cut Nyak Dhien was born into a religiously devout noble family in Aceh Besar, region VI Mukim in 1848. His father was named Teuku Nanta Seutia, an uleebalang VI Mukim, who is also a descendant of Datuk Makhudum Sati, an immigrant from Minangkabau. Datuk Makhudum Sati probably came to Aceh in the 18th century when the Aceh sultanate was ruled by Sultan Jamalul Badrul Munir. Therefore, the father of Cut Nyak Dien is of Minangkabau descent. Cut Nyak Dhien's mother uwas the daughter of uleebalang Lampagar. When she was little, Cut Nyak Dhien was a beautiful child. She received education in the fields of religion (which was educated by her parents or religious teachers) and household (cooking, serving her husband, and those concerning everyday life which were educated well by their parents). Many men like Cut Nyak Dien and try to propose to her. At the age of 12, he was married by his parents in 1862 to Teuku Cek Ibrahim Lamnga, the son of uleebalang Lamnga XIII. They have one son.

Ø Events and Issues

The Aceh war erupted, beginning with the Dutch declaration of war on Aceh on March 26, 1873, and began firing cannon fire into the mainland of Aceh from the battleship Citadel van Antwerp. In the first war (1873-1874), Aceh led by Panglima Polim and Sultan Machmud Syah fought against the Dutch led by Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler. At that time, the Dutch sent 3,198 soldiers. Then, on April 8, 1873, the Dutch landed on Ceureumen Beach under the leadership of Köhler, and immediately took control of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque and burned it. The Aceh Sultanate could win the first war. Ibrahim Lamnga who fought on the front lines returned with triumphant cheers, while Köhler was shot and killed in April 1873. Under the leadership of General Jan van Swieten, the area of VI Mukim was occupied by the Dutch in 1873,
After Cut Nyak Dien was widowed, came  Teuku Umar, a prominent Acehnese warrior, and proposed to her. At first Cut Nyak Dien refused. However, because Teuku Umar invited him to join the fight on the battlefield, Cut Nyak Dien finally accepted and remarried to Teuku Umar in 1880. This increased the morale of Aceh's struggle against Kaphe Ulanda (Dutch Kafir). Later, Cut Nyak Dhien and Teuku Umar had a child who was named Cut Gambang. The war was continued in a guerrilla manner and a fi'sabilillah war was waged. Around 1875, Teuku Umar made a move by approaching the Dutch and his relationship with the Dutch was getting stronger. On September 30, 1893, Teuku Umar and his 250 troops went to Kutaraja and "surrendered" to the Dutch. The Dutch were very happy because a dangerous enemy was willing to help them, so they gave Teuku Umar the title of Teuku Umar Johan Pahlawan and made him the commander of the Dutch troop unit with full power. Teuku Umar kept a secret plan to deceive the Dutch, even though he was accused of being a traitor by the Acehnese.
In fact,  Cut Nyak Meutia came to see Cut Nyak Dien and cursed him. Cut Nyak Dien tried to advise him to return to fight the Dutch. However, Teuku Umar still kept in touch with the Dutch. Umar then tried to learn Dutch tactics, while slowly replacing as many Dutch as possible in the unit he controlled. When the number of Acehnese in the army was sufficient, Teuku Umar plotted against the Dutch and claimed that he wanted to attack the Aceh base. Teuku Umar and Cut Nyak Dhien left with all the troops and heavy equipment, weapons and Dutch ammunition, never to return. . This betrayal was called Het verraad van Teukoe Oemar (the betrayal of Teuku Umar). The Dutch, who felt betrayed by Teuku Umar, finally got angry and launched a large-scale operation to arrest both Cut Nyak Dhien and Teuku Umar. However,
They began to attack the Netherlands while Gen. Van Swieten replaced. His successor, Gen. Jakobus Ludovicius Hubertus Pel, was quickly killed and the Dutch troops were in chaos. The Dutch then revoked the title of Teuku Umar and burned his house, and also pursued his whereabouts. Dien and Umar continued to put pressure on the Dutch, by attacking Banda Aceh (Kutaraja) and Meulaboh (the former base of Teuku Umar), so that the Dutch kept changing the generals on duty. . The unit "Maréchaussée" was then sent to Aceh. They are considered barbaric and very difficult to conquer by the Acehnese. In addition, most of "De Marsose" troops are Chinese-Ambon who destroy everything in its path. As a result of this, the Dutch troops felt sympathy for the Acehnese and Van der Heyden disbanded the unit "General Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz took advantage of this fear and began to hire Acehnese to spy on the rebel troops as informants so that the Dutch discovered Teuku Umar's plan to attack Meulaboh on February 11, 1899.
Finally,  Teuku Umar was killed by a bullet. When Cut Gambang, Cut Nyak Dhien's son, was crying because of his father's death, he was slapped by his mother who hugged him and said: "As Acehnese, we must not shed tears on people who have been martyred"  After the death of her husband, Cut Nyak Dien then led the resistance against the Dutch in the interior of Meulaboh with her small army and tried to forget her husband. These troops continued to fight until their destruction in 1901 because the Dutch army was used to fighting in the Aceh area. In addition, Cut Nyak Dien is getting old. His eyes had started to become blind, and he was affected by gout and also the number of his troops continued to decrease, and it was difficult to get food. This made the troops feel sorry for their troops. Cut Nyak Dhien's subordinate named Pang Laot reported the location of his headquarters to the Dutch out of compassion. As a result, the Dutch attacked the Cut Nyak Dien headquarters in Beutong Le Sageu. They were shocked and fought to the death. Dhien tried to take the rencong and tried to fight the enemy. Unfortunately,

Ø Reorientation

After being arrested, Cut Nyak Dhien was taken to Banda Aceh and treated there. Diseases such as nearsightedness and gout gradually healed. However, Cut Nyak Dien was eventually exiled to Sumedang, West Java, because of Dutch fears that his presence would create a spirit of resistance and also because he kept in touch with fighters who had not yet submitted. He was taken to Sumedang along with other Acehnese political prisoners and attracted the attention of the district head Suriaatmaja. In addition, the male prisoners also expressed their concern for Cut Nyak Dhien, but the Dutch soldiers were prohibited from revealing the identity of the prisoner. He was detained with a cleric named Ilyas who immediately realized that Cut Nyak Dhien was an expert in Islam, so he was nicknamed "Mother Perbu". Due to his old age, On November 6, 1908, Cut Nyak Dhien died. The tomb of "Mother Perbu" was only discovered in 1959 at the request of the then Governor of Aceh, Ali Hasan. "Mother Perbu" was recognized by  President Soekarno as a National Hero of Indonesia through Presidential Decree No.106 of 1964 on 2 May 1964.
